"You've
got to be a little bit loony to do extreme sports…it's inside of
you. Other sports that don't raise my blood don't do anything for
me.
The
accident was a freak of nature thing, because it was the last run
of the day. We had taken an hour's break for lunch. It was like,
'Let's go blast one more time'. We jumped on our bikes and we're
riding like buddies, looping around the perimeter of the whole park.
We were about halfway through. The dirt was frozen and slippery…Myles
was in front. The next thing I knew he slid off the side of the
trail… and he hit this one tree that was there.
I
knew he hit pretty hard. I laid my bike against the side of the
hill and jumped down to where he was lying. I looked down at his
face and said 'What are you doing, Myles'? The first thing he said
was, 'I broke both my legs'.
He
told me to go get help. That was the hardest thing…to leave him…but
I had no choice. I went back to my house. I called CALSTAR medical
helicopter. My buddies were riding at the park and they took off
to go be with Myles. I got ahold of the rangers and met them at
an intermediate spot and I took them to where Myles was. By the
time we got there, CALSTAR had already landed. They were there in
10 minutes with two nurses. We were lucky-it's like being in a hospital
out on the trails. They had IV's in Myles before they removed him
from the hill…I was holding Myles' hand. We had to put Myles in
the rangers' Suburban and they took him an eighth of a mile to where
the helicopter had landed. I wanted to go with them but Myles said,
'Get ahold of my parents, dude'. I wished him luck. He smiled at
me. And he was on his way."
